In the home volcanic eruption science kit, we will learn about the structure of the Earth from the core to the crust and the types of volcanoes. We will also learn about magma, lava, and volcanic ash, and even visit the Hawaiian Islands. To understand why volcanoes erupt, we will conduct several fascinating experiments and create a home volcano.
How does it work?
A volcanic eruption occurs when high pressure building up deep within the Earth pushes molten magma through cracks formed between parts of the Earth's crust—the tectonic plates. When the pressure reaches its peak, the magma is pushed to the surface of the Earth and erupts from the volcano's crater. Once it erupts, the magma flowing down the slopes of the mountain is called lava, and it hardens as it cools. Thus, each volcanic eruption makes the volcano larger.
